School Drugs does punk right.
A lot of bands now a days have a hard time recreating the anger and aggression that we all felt the first time we heard Minor Threat or Dead Kennedy’s.
But not SCHOOL DRUGS.
MODERN MEDICINE is their latest release, and it is an extremely well executed projection of what punk bands should sound like.
It hits hard, has an agenda, and is the musical equivalent of a big middle finger to the world. The production quality is great too, which is awesome to hear energy come from a record that has lots of effort and care about quality, all while not losing what makes the band great.
“Question the world, question your life.
Question the voices from the other side.
Question what's right, question what's wrong.
Question the voice that sings the fucking song.
And I'm not immune, and that's the fucking truth.”
By far my favourite song on the whole record, is “Gimme Doubt”. The ending just crushes.
SCHOOL DRUGS do have extreme influence from older punk bands but they do very well at keeping it fresh. It was nothing short of enjoyable to hear something that seemed familiar but knowing it was still new. They took metaphorical hardcore punk “wheel” and carved SD real big in the side of it.
I love the small underlying themes with MODERN MEDICINE lyrically opening up the whole album with some big questions about big pharma and the effect on our lives it has.
“I took the pills, it made it worse. I took the medication everybody said it works. I gave 'em money, they gave me lies
I took a couple hits, I think I'd rather fucking die.”
Punk should always be engaging, the level and subject the bands choose is their choice, but I really love what SCHOOL DRUGS has to say in this record.
There is so much content musically and lyrically on this ten song record(totaling 18 minutes and 21 seconds), and that is EXACTLY how I like my music packaged.
